The foreign language requirement applies to all students earning degrees granted by, or under the jurisdiction of, the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Placement in elementary and intermediate foreign language courses is made by the appropriate placement examination.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at USC offers Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Students develop business competence in the language as well as a deeper appreciation for the views and values of a foreign culture.

For students intending to major in a STEM field or applying to a selective university such as USC, we strongly recommend you take more than the minimum “a-g” courses (i.e., five or six years of mathematics up to AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC, and three or four years of laboratory science).
